Alfa Romeo says it wanted the 4C to be more focused than a Cayman, and easier to live with than a Lotus Exige, but while it has achieved this, the 4C is a lot closer in character to the Lotus than the Porsche.

It you're looking for a sports car that you can use every day, then, the Porsche is a much better buy – especially when you consider that it's still amazing to drive on challenging roads.

However, the 4C's blend of style, performance and feel does give it plenty of appeal. As long as you have another, more practical car as well, it's well worth considering.

Alfa Romeo has announced that its 4C sports car has turned in an impressive 8:04 Nurburgring lap time, and it could still go faster.

The 8:04 lap time puts the 4C in the same company as the Audi R8 V8, Porsche Cayman S and is even faster than the previous BMW E92 M3 model. But the Italian automaker believes that it might still go quicker.

There is some bad news for American Alfa Romeo fans, as the U.S.-spec 4C will be about 100kg (220lbs) heavier. “We had to add some aluminum inserts in the carbon fiber chassis. The U.S. crash test requires a different structure to absorb different impact forces. We also had to comply with rules covering the gasoline tank, the fuel lines and emissions,” Alfa’s product boss detailed.

A new report indicates Alfa Romeo has some updates in tow for the recently introduced 4C.

Auto Edizione is reporting the Italian marque will offer the 4C with a new set of headlights derived from the 2011 concept. This is great news since the headlight design has been the subject of many disputes revolving around what we consider as being a very beautiful car. This piece of information has actually been confirmed by the car's design team leader Marco Tencone in an interview in which he added the Launch Edition will focus on weight reduction.

The same Italian source mentions Alfa Romeo is also working on a more powerful version of the 4C, as well as on a targa derivative which will have different headlights and a new interior cabin. The beefed up 4C could be the rumored Stradale which will allegedly have 266 bhp (198 kW) compared to the standard model that provides 237 bhp (177 kW). This car will be based on a track-only 4C Racing which is also rumored to be in the works at Alfa's headquarters.
