Mai toata lumea ar crede ca sursa de inspiratie pentru seria 916 a fost conceptul Proteo. Nimic mai fals!

Povestea incepe in 1980, cand, cu prilejul aniversarii a 75 de ani pentru revista Automobil Revue, Sergio Pininfarina se decide sa-i faca un cadou cu totul si cu totul special: un concept car sub forma unui coupe ce avea sa fie complet functional. Totul coincide cu lansarea noului Audi Quattro Coupe la salonul international de la Geneva din acelasi an, masina care ii atrage atentia constructorului italian ca putand fi o baza potentiala pentru viitorul sau automobil. Cei de la Audi raspund pozitiv si in scurt timp doneaza celor de la Pininfarina o astfel de masina.
Sub conducerea lui Leonardo Fioravanti, directorului de cercetare/dezvoltare al Pininfarina S.p.a, Enrico Fumia construieste o caroserie complet noua pe platforma celor de la Audi, cu 30cm mai scurta, 8cm mai joasa, 90kg mai usoara si cu un coeficient aerodinamic de 0.45. Ia astfel nastere Audi Quartz. Testat de catre cei de la Automobil Revue in 1986, prototipul produce o viteza de top de 217kmh, o acceleratie 0-100kmh in doar 7.1s si 0-180kmh in 18.7s.
La sfarsitul proiectului, Audi decide sa cumpere prototipul si il prezinta in 1981 la Salonul Auto de la Geneva.

Cativa ani mai tarziu, in 1986, Pininfarina primeste sarcina de a desena conceptul unui nou coupe, urmasul lui GTV6. Acelasi Enrico Fumia vine cu primele schite care sunt repede acceptate de catre managementul Alfa Romeo. Primele modelari iau nastere in primavara lui 1988, urmand ca la sfarsitul lui 1989 modelul final la scara 1:1 sa fie predat catre Centro Stile, unde Walter de'Silva avea sarcina de a sa se ocupe de partea de detalii.
In 1991 Alfa Romeo prezinta la salonul auto de la Geneva conceptul Proteo, considerat de mai toata lumea sursa de inspiratie pentru seria 916. In realitate, conceptul realizat de Walter de'Silva si Alberto Bertelli preia o serie de elemente stilistice destinate viitoarei serii 916 pentru a testa reactia publicului.
Ce mi se pare curios este ca, desi seria 916 a fost construita pe platforma lui 155, Proteo a fost realizat pe platforma lui 164.

Asemanarile dintre Quartz, Proteo si mai tarziu GTV/Spider sunt evidente: capota fata "dintr-o bucata", farurile rotunde ascunse sub capota, design-ul partii inferioare a spoilerului fata, linia laterala "taiata" inca de la inceputul spoilerului fata, stopurile sub forma unei benzi lungi de-a lungul intregii parti spate, ba chiar si culoarea distincta a partii inferioare a masinii - spoiler fata&praguri (Quartz vs. GTV/Spider Ph1).

Interesant este ca solutiile tehnice gandite initial pentru GTV si-au avut inspiratia tot in conceptul Quartz, sau, mai precis, in Audi Quattro, astfel incat GTVul a fost initial imaginat cu posibilitatea unui sistem de tractiune integrala..

La final, in martie 1995, tot la salonul auto de la Geneva, sunt prezentate noile GTV si Spider, pe care le indragim si astazi!
